Central Austin, or downtown, is where the government and business districts meet. Sleek high rises and smaller, historic buildings populate the area. There are still a few single-family houses and duplexes on the western perimeter of downtown, but most dwellings are apartments, luxury condominiums, and townhomes.
Congress Avenue is the historic main street of Austin and home of the Texas State Capitol. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses line the street. Second Street is considered the shopping and entertainment section of town. It has cute boutiques, trendy restaurants, and a residential side featuring high-end condominiums.
The Market District is in the west end and is known for its luxury high-rise condominiums. Although it is primarily residential, it also has restaurants and bars. The Seaholm District is a little south of the Market District and is a mixed-use neighborhood with coffee shops, restaurants, and businesses. Rainey Street is on the edge of downtown, primarily residential, with multifamily units and lavish condominiums. Most of the single-family homes have been converted into cozy restaurants and bars.
Many areas of downtown are considered entertainment districts. Red River and Sixth Street are two districts that feature live music venues, restaurants, and nightclubs. On weekends Sixth Street is blocked off so people can wander around without worrying about traffic.
Downtown is lively, where people live if they want to be in the thick of things. It has an urban, energetic vibe. Government buildings, businesses, restaurants, and nightlife can all be found downtown. Everything locals want or need is right at their fingertips. Many residents are young single, professionals, or dual-income couples without children. Central Austin is also densely populated with a small footprint, making it easy to walk, bike, or Uber wherever you want to go in the city.
