North Austin is known as “Silicon Hills” for its tech campuses found there. eBay, Apple, HP, and Facebook call North Austin home. Although downtown is only 12-15 miles from the north side, people working in the technology industry often find it more convenient to live in North Austin to avoid long commute times. Many of the technology campuses are located in the east part of North Austin. It is also near highways, offering residents quick access and improved mobility. Many of the homes in the area are 3,000 square feet with vaulted ceilings and modern furnishings. Residents are far from Domain but have the Arboretum, another open-air mall. While North Austin is not as flashy as some other areas, it has perks. It is spacious and peaceful and still close enough to the city to enjoy all downtown has to offer.
Many families, retirees, and empty nesters live in North Austin. Most people select North Austin because they prefer the suburbs over the city. The area has a suburban look and feel and a quiet, low-key atmosphere. There are tree-lined streets, established neighborhoods, good schools, and plenty of parks for outdoor activities.
Single professionals generally opt to stay in North Austin because of work. There is some nightlife, but it is different from the city. When locals want more of a festive climate, they drive downtown. The north side does not have eclectic boutiques or big music venues but still has bars, restaurants, and things to do. The locals at the Domain can walk to shops and cafes, but for the most part, if you live in North Austin, you need a car to get around town.

District Kitchen + Cocktails serves a little bit of everything. It partners with local farmers to bring the freshest ingredients to the table. The delicious food, relaxed atmosphere, and fun happy hour keep people returning. The exposed brick, white linens, and chandeliers give the French Quarter Grille a cool vibe. The Cajun and French-inspired dishes are as tasty as any you will find in New Orleans.
There are plenty of things to do in North Austin. For nature enthusiasts, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park has over 250 acres of green space. It has miles of paved trails for hiking or biking, a playground area, and a sports and recreational facility. Bull Creek District Park is more undeveloped and out of the way. It has nearly 50 acres with areas to fish, hike and swim.
How about an unusual museum experience? The Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms allows you to travel back in time and see what Texas was like in the 1800s. It is a 90-acre outdoor museum that offers tours, workshops, and classes like archery and weaving. Austin FC, or the Austin Football Club, is Austin’s professional major league soccer team. If you enjoy soccer, North Austin is home to the Q2 Stadium.
